Matthew Schmeling’s practice focuses on civil and criminal litigation. He defends individuals and organizations charged with criminal, regulatory, and professional discipline offences. He represents individuals and organizations involved in a wide variety of civil litigation.

Overview

Matthew defends individuals charged with drug and tobacco offences, criminal driving offences, sexual offences, weapons offences, fraud, attempted murder, and other allegations.

Matthew defends individuals and organizations under investigation or charged with occupational health and safety offences or other regulatory offences.

Matthew acts for doctors, police officers, psychologists, pharmacists and other professionals in relation to disciplinary investigations and charges.

Matthew regularly appears before tribunals and all levels of court in Saskatchewan. He acts for clients facing charges in Manitoba and Alberta and has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada.

Matthew held the Chair position of the Canadian Bar Association’s Saskatchewan Criminal Justice Section from 2018 to 2021. In 2024 he was elected to a three-year term as a Bencher for the Law Society of Saskatchewan.

In his time at McDougall Gauley LLP, Matthew has had the benefit of practicing alongside senior counsel including Aaron A. Fox., K.C. and Gordon J. Kuski, K.C.

Matthew grew up on a farm outside of Regina, SK. He obtained his engineering degree from the University of Regina in 2008 and worked as an engineer in Grande Prairie, AB. He attended law school at the University of Saskatchewan in 2011 and joined McDougall Gauley LLP in 2014.
