McDougall Gauley LLP is pleased to announce Matthew Schmeling has been appointed as a Judge of the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan, effective February 17, 2026.

The Honourable Judge Schmeling obtained his engineering degree from the University of Regina in 2008 and worked as an engineer in Grande Prairie, AB. He attended law school at the University of Saskatchewan beginning in 2011 and joined McDougall Gauley in 2014 as an articling student. He was called to the bar in 2015, and became a partner with the firm in 2022.

Judge Schmeling’s practice was focused on civil and criminal litigation, regulatory defence and professional discipline. He is the former Chair of the Canadian Bar Association (Saskatchewan Branch) Criminal Justice Section (2018 to 2021) and was elected as a Bencher of the Law Society of Saskatchewan in 2024.
